El Kab

El Kab

Some 32km (20miles) south of Esna, el Kab,or Nekheb as it was anciently known, is one of Egypt’s most historic sites.Together with Nekhen (kom el-Ahmer) on the opposite bank of the Nile, this was an important area of Predynastic settlement. Elkab was the home of the vulture-goddess Nekhbet, ‘She of Nekhen’ who became the tutelary goddes of Upper Egypt, paralleling the cobra-goddess Wadjit of Lower Egypt. It is likely that a simple temple structure was present at el Kab from the Early Dynastic Period;and rulers of the Middle Kingdom certainly built here, though the present remains are mainly of temples of New Kingdom and post -New Kingdom eras.
